About the museum
Teknikens Hus is a science centre in Luleå that wants to awaken children's and young people's interest in technology, natural science and mathematics. The idea came from Ann-Marie Israelsson, who wanted to attract more students to Luleå tekniska universitet (Luleå University of Technology) and started a trial activity for preschool children in an apartment. With the university as a base, the project received support from LKAB, SSAB and Vattenfall, as well as from Luleå Municipality and several foundations. Construction began in the spring of 1987, and Teknikens Hus opened on 27 May 1988.
Today the house is run by a non-profit foundation whose members include Luleå tekniska universitet, the county's municipalities, Luleå Municipality, LKAB, SSAB and Vattenfall. The exhibitions are based on Norrbotten and its nature, ore, forests and water. Walking through the house is like travelling through the county: coast, inland and mountains.
Visitors can, among other things, charge their phone in a hamster wheel in the exhibition Drivkraft, take a trip down into a mine, steer radio-controlled boats among the quays of a harbour, explore iron and steel production and watch the stars in the planetarium in the globe in the middle of the house.
