About the museum
Flygmuseet F 21 (the F 21 Aviation Museum) was founded in 1995 by a non-profit association and lies next to the Norrbotten Air Wing (Norrbottens flygflottilj) and Luleå Airport, about five kilometres south of Luleå. The collections reflect different phases of the wing's history since F 21 was formed in 1941: service in earlier times, the aircraft types that have been at the unit, and the development of materiel in the Swedish Air Force.
In the Lundberg Hall stand, among other things, the reconnaissance version of the Mustang, the Vampire, the Tunnan, the Sk 60 and the SG 38 glider. The outdoor exhibition covering about 3,000 square metres shows aircraft such as the Lansen, the Draken and several variants of the Viggen, the Hkp 3 and Hkp 4 helicopters, as well as radar stations and air surveillance towers. Indoors, about 500 square metres show the development in ten-year intervals, along with objects and photographs from the wing's various departments.
Four special exhibitions deal with the Swedish volunteer air wing F 19 in Finland during the Winter War, Operation Balchen (flygoperation Balchen), emergency landings and crashes in Norrbotten during the Second World War, and the Cold War. Visitors can also fly the Jaktviggen in the museum's flight simulator.
