About the museum
Norrbottens Järnvägsmuseum is located in the old industrial settlement of Karlsvik, about 6 km from central Luleå. The museum is owned and run by the non-profit association Malmbanans Vänner (Friends of the Iron Ore Line) and is one of Sweden’s largest railway museums. The focus is on preserving and showing objects connected with the Malmbanan (Iron Ore Line), but there are also vehicles, buildings and other objects from other parts of Norrland.
The museum and the association own about 140 vehicles, most of which can be shown to the public. On the museum site there are ten buildings, including two exhibition halls with vehicles, a station building from Koskullskulle and a signal box moved from Svartön in Luleå.
During the summer, veteran trains with a rail bus run on the Gammelstad–Karlsvikshyttan railway. The association works with volunteers and also shows earlier exhibitions on, among other things, the history of Luleå, the centenary of electric traction on the Malmbanan and sleeping-car travel.
