About the museum
Garpenbergs gammelgård is a local heritage farm opposite Garpenberg church in southern Dalarna. The site contains about ten older buildings that have been moved here from villages in the district. These include a double cottage with beautiful wall paintings, a mine cottage, storehouses, barns, a smithy and a boat shed.
The farm is run by Garpenbergs hembygdsförening (Garpenberg Local Heritage Association). The association’s collections consist mainly of objects from older forestry, farming and mining, reflecting Garpenberg’s history as a works and mining district. The association arranges visits to the Gruvkapellet (Mine Chapel) and manages the hiking trails Bensåsleden, Konnsjöleden and Banvallen.
Close to the farm lies the milplatsen (charcoal-kiln site), with a charcoal-burner’s hut with a stove and a large barbecue area. Recurring events are held during the year, such as Walpurgis Night, Midsummer, National Day, a well-drinking gathering (källdrickning), a homecomers’ day (hemvändardag), a charcoal-kiln evening and a surströmming party.
