About the museum
Klosters bruksmuseum (Kloster Works Museum) is located in the old stable next to Klosters herrgård (Kloster Manor) in Hedemora Municipality. The building, which on the outside resembles a church, was restored in the 1980s and converted into a museum. To avoid disturbing the architecture, the exhibitions were placed on freestanding glass screens in front of the walls.
The exhibition follows the history of the site from the Cistercian monastery founded at the end of the 15th century, through the period when Kloster was Sweden's largest gunpowder works, to the era of the ironworks, which lasted until the end of the 19th century. Alongside the works there was farming with meat production and successful cattle breeding, and a trading association was run early on according to cooperative ideas. The inventor Gustaf de Laval and his connection to the place are also presented.
In summer 2020 the museum was extended with an exhibition on the Klosters herrgårdspark (Kloster manor park) from the 1700s to the present day, with information about the Klosteråns dalgång nature reserve.
