About the museum

Gillberga hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1934, and since then members and others have donated objects to the district. Only at the end of the 1900s was an inventory drawn up, which then comprised 175 objects. In 2000 the society began fitting out premises on the second and third floors of the large stable building, which was built in 1918–1920 by Karl Nordin. An object store was inaugurated on 12 June 2004, and the collections have since grown to just over 8,000 objects, from the late 1500s to the present day.

The museum displays fire brigade equipment and a unique police museum with older police equipment from the police in Säffle and Karlstad. Next to the stable building lies Widén's old smithy. In the same stable building, the Viking ship Glad of Gillberga was built over three years in the 1990s.

The museum is located in central Nysäter near the old market stalls, which are a listed building and are managed by the local heritage society. The market site has been documented since 1756, and in 1984 Nysäter's market was revived; it is held on the last Saturday in August. In Gamla Järnhandeln (the old hardware store) the Hantverkskaféet (craft café) operates in summer.
