About the museum
Greta Garbo’s maternal family came from the area around Högsby, which is the background to why this town has a museum about the actress. Following a proposal in the municipal council, Högsby municipality invested in a tourism project, and in spring 1998 the municipality bought a collection of around 1,100 photographs from Garbo’s films. The pictures were taken by the film studios’ own studio photographers and cover all of her films.
When the project ended, the Garbosällskapet (Garbo Society) was formed on 3 February 2001 as a non-profit, independent association. The society took over the care and running of the exhibition, where a selection of about 100 pictures has been shown each year together with film props and other objects.
Through purchases, gifts and loans of items that belonged to Garbo personally, including from the auction of her estate in Beverly Hills in December 2012, the society was able from 2014 to call its activities the Garbo Museum. The premises are in a bank building from 1920. According to the society, the museum is closed due to restoration of the building, and a new exhibition has been announced nearby.
