About the museum

Museiföreningen Gefle-Dala Jernväg, MfGDJ (Gefle-Dala Railway Museum Association), was founded in 1974 and is a non-profit railway association based in the old engine-shed area next to Falun central station. The association preserves railway history from Dalarna: vehicles built at the Vagn- och maskinfabriken (Carriage and Machine Factory) in Falun, which later became ASJF, or which served in the province, including a steam locomotive from the Gefle–Dala Jernväg (Gefle–Dala Railway).

In the area there are two engine sheds. The older shed was built by the Gefle–Dala Railway but was transferred to Bergslagernas Järnvägar (BJ) when they built the line from Gothenburg to Falun, and it has eleven stalls. The larger GDJ shed has 18 stalls and is used as an operational shed. The BJ shed functions as a railway museum with vehicles that are not used in traffic, and around the museum the smithy from the SJ (Swedish State Railways) era remains, among other things.

The association also runs train services. Veteran trains, usually with steam locomotives, run on the Falun–Grycksbo line from a special platform at Falun central station, with a stop at Bergsgården.
