About the museum
Grytholmens friluftsmuseum on Muskö has been run since 1982 by Muskö Local Heritage Society. The museum aims to give visitors the chance to experience a genuine historic setting that was once the home and workplace of an archipelago farmer's family, and to help Muskö residents find their roots and understand Muskö better.
The core is the crofter's house Grytholmen, a side-room cottage probably built in the 1840s, which lay under Arbottna manor. The last permanent resident died in 1980, although farming had ended as early as the 1950s. The local heritage society has supplemented the crofter's house with buildings moved here from other parts of the island, and today there are about ten buildings on a slope down towards a cove of Fårfjärden. The Undantagsstugan, a retirement cottage, serves as the museum's café, and Östra rotens fattigstuga (the poor house of the Östra rote district) serves as the local history archive. By the water there are, among other things, a boathouse, a tool shed, a wash house, a root cellar and a dance floor, and in the boathouse a collection of older outboard motors is on display.
The museum is open for visits with refreshments on some days in July, when music and exhibitions are often arranged. At the site there is a jetty and a natural harbour for temporary boat visitors, and midsummer is celebrated at Grytholmen every year.
