About the museum

Halvarstugan in Båtstad, three kilometres south of Höljes along national road 62, is Värmland's northernmost homestead museum. The farm was built in 1861–1862 by Olof Halvarsson, known in the district as Halvarsgubben, and is today owned and run by Norra Finnskoga hembygdsförening (local heritage society).

Besides the main farmhouse (mangårdsbyggnad), several older buildings belong to the farm: a couple of log storehouses (härbren), a smithy, a stone cellar and a forest hut with an attached stable. The collections include, among other things, a spirit still (brännvinsapparat) from Bennäset and log-driving tools from the district's forestry and river industries. According to an old legend, Halvarsgubben buried a silver treasure on the farm in troubled times and never found it again when peace came.

Groups can order refreshments at the farm on request, for example kolbullar (Swedish potato dumplings) or nävgröt (traditional porridge).
