About the museum

Rots skans was built in 1677 as a border defence against Norway, which was then under Danish rule, but the installation was only used for about nine years before the king ordered it to be abandoned. The Elfdalen local heritage society was founded in 1911 and in 1913 began building up a local history museum on the site; from 1916 buildings and objects were collected.

Today the homestead museum (hembygdsgård) consists of nearly 30 buildings inside and outside the ramparts. The settings show buildings, housing and crafts from the late Middle Ages to around 1900. The collections comprise about 8,000 objects and around 200,000 photographs, films and sound recordings, and the homestead museum is counted among the larger ones in Dalarna.
