About the museum

The Älvdalen porphyry was formed about 1.7 billion years ago in connection with volcanic eruptions. Älvdalen porphyry was discovered during the first half of the 1700s, and in 1788 Älvdalens Porfyrverk (Älvdalen Porphyry Works) started, where a unique art industry took shape. From the red stone urns and decorative and utilitarian objects were made and sold far beyond the region.

For just over half a century the company Hagström in Älvdalen made accordions, electric guitars and amplifiers. It grew from a one-man business in a shop in Älvdalen into a world-wide group with over 400 employees. The figures are impressive: 700,000 accordions, 130,000 electric guitars and basses, thousands of loudspeakers and amplifiers, and 70,000 Swedes were trained at Hagström’s music school.

The museum has three departments with permanent exhibitions: the porphyry production, the bog iron ore smelting and AB Albin Hagströms instruments. The building was once part of the Hagström factories in central Älvdalen. Visitors walk round on their own among urns, machines and guitars, and the staff gladly tell the stories of the people behind the objects.
