About the museum

At the start of the 20th century the village of Hovgården on Adelsö consisted of five farms, and Uppgården was one of them. After the last tenant, Gustaf Claesson, died in 1937, Adelsö Municipality was able to acquire the farm with funds he had donated. From 1930 there was a post office on Adelsö, and in the early 1940s it moved into Uppgården, where the postmaster lived. The post office closed in 1970.

In 1982 Ekerö Municipality made Uppgården available to Adelsö föreningsråd (association council) for a local history museum and an association premises, and the running was handled by Adelsö hembygdslag (local heritage society). The buildings have been restored with extensive voluntary work, and in 2007 a new carriage house was inaugurated.

Permanent exhibitions

• Museala rum i mangårdsbyggnaden – The kitchen and a chamber are furnished as museum rooms, and a larger room is the former post office. The upper floor has another kitchen and a chamber.
• Bagarstugan och spannmålsmagasinet – The bakehouse has a farmhand's room and an exhibition of older objects from homes and households; the grain store shows older implements from farming, crafts and the home.
