About the museum
Tyresö slott (Tyresö Castle) was built in the 1630s by the Councillor of the Realm Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna on a medieval estate, and Tyresö church, close by, was built in 1641. In the 17th century the estate covered an area corresponding to today's Tyresö Municipality. Maria Sofia De la Gardie inherited the castle in 1648 after her husband and lived there, running industrial operations for a long time.
Of the many owners, the couple Claes and Caroline Lagergren are the ones who have most shaped the castle seen today. They bought Tyresö in 1892 with her fortune and had the architect Isak Gustaf Clason, who also designed the Nordiska museet, carry out an extensive remodelling and extension in the spirit of National Romanticism. They installed a telephone, central heating and bathrooms, renewed the castle garden with an Italian-inspired terrace, and built new farm buildings and staff housing.
Claes Lagergren bequeathed the castle with its collections and land to the Nordiska museet in 1930, and since 1932 it has been shown to visitors during the summer season. The castle has been a listed building of national significance since 1991, and the area is of national interest for cultural environment conservation.
On the guided tours visitors follow life in the house from the 17th century to 1930, with the dining room, service rooms, library and salons on the main floor, and bedrooms, a bathroom and a small Catholic chapel on the upper floor. The park is one of the country's first English parks and is open all year round.
