About the museum
Ingaskärs lots- och hamnmuseum (Ingaskär Pilot and Harbour Museum) is located in the middle of the island of Ingaskär, at the entrance to Stocka harbour. The museum tells the story of the pilot station and the work of the pilots between 1884 and 1967. The pilot station at Stockaviken received a royal sailing permit in 1861, and with the rise of the sawmill industry pilots who knew the stone-filled waters were needed. A few years later a pilot cottage was built on Ingaskär, popularly often called lotsskäret (the pilots’ skerry). The pilot station was closed in 1967 and its work moved to Hölick.
The Stiftelsen Ingaskärs Lots- och hamnmuseum (Ingaskär Pilot and Harbour Museum Foundation) was formed in 1994, and the museum has existed since 1995. The pilot house was built at the end of the 19th century and has been renovated and extended in stages, and there is a large amount of material in the form of photographs, articles and old documents to study there. On the island there is also a rebuilt spirbåk, which was formerly a landmark of Stocka harbour, a re-erected storm-warning mast and a lighthouse.
The activities are run entirely on a voluntary basis. Visitors can take a guided tour, but there is also plenty of material in the pilot cottage to study on one’s own.
