About the museum
Motala Verkstad was founded in 1822 at the initiative of Baltzar von Platen, who proposed that the Göta Canal Company should set up a mechanical workshop. It was on the land of what is today the old works area that von Platen broke ground for the Göta Canal in May 1810. The works was later called the cradle of Swedish engineering industry and made, among other things, locomotives, ships, steam engines, bridges and radio masts. The expression Motalapassning (roughly “Motala fit”, meaning work of the highest quality) also comes from here.
Intresseföreningen Motala Verkstad (Motala Verkstad Interest Association) shows an exhibition on the history of the works in the Varvsbyggnaden in the works area. During the summer it invites visitors to gatherings, for example a nostalgia meet-up with community singing in July 2024, when the exhibition was open.
