About the museum

Motala industrimuseum reflects Motala’s industrial history and shows products made at AB Motala Verkstad in different eras. The museum opened in 2004 in the company’s former premises beside Lokverkstan and was then part of Motala musei- och hembygdsförening (Motala Museum and Heritage Association). Motala municipality took over the operation in 2017. When the contractor Serneke bought the properties of Motala Verkstad in 2021 for a housing project, the museum had its last day open in the old premises in October 2023.

The collections include models, photographs and working machines, among them the LIMO tractor, Sweden’s first crawler tractor, named after the company Lindholmen-Motala. There was also an exhibition of products from Electrolux, which has long been active in Motala, and the first locomotive built on the site, Carlsund from 1862, named after the workshop’s head at the time, Otto Edvard Carlsund.

The museum is closed because of the move, and the next time it opens will be in a new museum building. The location of the new building has not yet been decided, and preparations for the move are under way. In the meantime the collections can be experienced through the municipality’s digital tour, a walk-through of the museum.
