About the museum
The Museilägenheterna on Verkstadsön in Motala show what life was like for the workers at Motala Verkstad. Östergötlands museum (Östergötland Museum) has furnished two homes in a period-faithful way, based on estate inventories from 1853 and 1903, so that visitors can see how the families slept, ate and cooked.
In the room on the left lived tinsmith Bergkvist with his wife Hedda Kristina and their two daughters. The room is about 20 square metres, with distemper-painted walls with spatter decoration, and the open hearth was cast at Motala Verkstad. The room on the right is furnished after the 1903 inventory and shows the effects of the industrial revolution: tinsmith Helge Harström lived there with his wife Johanna and two sons, and the family's most expensive possession was an iron stove. The home also contains a reprint of the family's wallpaper.
