About the museum

Charlottenborgs slott (Charlottenborg Castle) was built by Count Ludwig Weirich Lewenhaupt and completed in 1652. He named the castle after his wife, Charlotte von Hohenlohe-Neuenstein. During the 1700s the castle was owned, among others, by Carl Gustaf Boije, and Israel Lagerfelt bought it in 1790 and had it thoroughly renovated.

Motala Municipality bought the castle and the land in 1959, and it was a private residence until 1981. Motala Musei- och Hembygdsförening (Motala Museum and Local History Association) opened Motala museum in the castle in 1984, and since 2016 the activities have been run by the municipality's culture unit.

Today the castle presents 11,000 years of Motala's history, from Stone Age finds and two reconstructed Stone Age people to the Göta Canal and the Motala Bridge. There are also wood carvings by Sophia Isberg, wall paintings by Carl-Erik Törner and art from the collections.
