About the museum
Motala Motormuseum is in Motala harbour by Lake Vättern, in the same building as Hotell Nostalgi and its restaurant. The museum was founded in 1995 and shows cars and motorcycles in built-up settings that are not simple backdrops but working scenes, among them a complete car workshop from the 1920s and 1930s and a petrol station with pumps that start when a visitor approaches.
Among the cars is the revue king Karl Gerhard’s Daimler from 1961, Erik Zetterström’s “Kar de Mumma” Rolls-Royce and the national poet Verner von Heidenstam’s Chrysler Imperial from 1931, where visitors can hear him reading a poem from the back seat. The museum has one of Sweden’s largest collections of Rolls-Royces, which is displayed in a newly built section of 600 square metres.
A separate department for motorcycles, scooters and mopeds opened in 2015. Around 125 vehicles are shown here, including the whole motorcycle collection of Einar “Motala Linkan” Lindqvist, who competed from 1926 to the early 1950s and became several-times Nordic and Swedish champion in hill climbing. The museum often changes its objects and arranges special exhibitions and events. In 2016 the museum was named Årets turismpris (Tourism Prize of the Year) at Motalagalan.
