About the museum

Gamla Bion in Örsundsbro was built in 1925 by carpenter Edvard Johansson, who converted his workshop building into a cinema and theatre and moved the carpentry shop down to the cellar. Örsundsbro had grown up after the railway arrived in 1912. Films were first shown by travelling projectionists and later by “Bio-Paul”, who showed films from 1932 until the cinema closed in 1961.

The building was converted in several stages, including with a stage, projection room, gallery, foyer and kiosk, and held around 200 seats at the end of the 1920s. When competition from television became too strong, the last film was shown in 1961, and the premises then stood unused for many years.

In the mid-1980s the house was sold and renovation began. The association Gamla Bion i Örsundsbro was founded in 1987 with the aim of restoring the premises to how they looked when they closed in 1961. The cinema was reopened in 1992, and the carpentry workshop has also been renovated. Today the cinema and the carpentry shop function as a living museum with film screenings, concerts and visits by arrangement.
