About the museum
Handelsmuseet Kappen lies by the harbour at the bridge in Örsundsbro and tells the story of the Hagunda and Lagunda hundreds' (härader) goods-purchasing joint-stock company. The company was formed in 1850 on the initiative of county governor (landshövding) Robert von Kraemer and is regarded as Sweden's first cooperative company. Its purpose was to strengthen the farmers' finances through joint purchases of goods.
The building is largely a copy of the original Bolagsboden (company shop) and stands on the same spot. The interior comes largely from Tuna handel in Hjälsta. The museum was inaugurated on 6 July 1978 by county governor Ragnar Edenman and is owned and run by Lagunda hembygdsförening (local heritage society).
The name Kappen comes from the old grain store that stood here earlier. It is not entirely certain why the store received this name: either it refers to the grain measure kappe, or to a kappland (an area of land belonging to the store). The museum also holds local maritime history.
