About the museum
Kvekgården was originally part of the row village (radby) Stora Kvek. When the village was divided during the land reform (laga skifte) of 1855, the farms were moved out onto their own fields, and Kvekgården was then the village's largest farm. It is a so-called central Swedish enclosed farm (kringbyggd gård), with a main courtyard (mangård) and a cattle yard (fägård). Today ten buildings have been preserved, built from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s.
In the mid-1800s the farm was owned by Olof Jansson and was then called Ol-Jans. His daughter Lotta Lundevall took over the farm and did not want to rebuild or extend it. When she died in 1926 without heirs, the farm therefore looked roughly as it had a hundred years earlier. As early as the 1910s the Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum) had noticed and documented the farm.
Sydvästra Upplands hembygdsgille (South-West Uppland Heritage Guild) took over the farm in 1931 and had it thoroughly renovated in 1933–1934. The buildings were partly dismantled, foundations were laid and hearths were rebuilt, and a large loge (a type of farm building) was replaced by a simpler one moved here from the neighbouring parish. The farm has since functioned as an open-air museum. In 1948 it was donated to Upplands fornminnesförening (Uppland Antiquities Association), which in 1952 also received the adjacent guard's cottage (vaktarstugan) as a gift. Since 2003 Kvekgården has been a protected building (byggnadsminne).
