About the museum
Johannamuseet opened in 1983 in Sandåkra outside Skurup. It was founded by Manfred Almkvist, who was born in the area in 1911 and worked professionally with cars and workshops. The museum is named after his Ford T from 1914, which he bought in 1952 and which became the museum's symbol. He made trips and took part in rallies with the car, and it also appeared in several films.
Almkvist collected and restored the objects himself, so most of the collections still work. Many objects are loaned out for film shoots. The collection began with vehicles but grew over time to include almost everything that was common in homes, workplaces, farming and shops during the 20th century.
Today the museum shows around 30 exhibitions. There are vintage cars and motorcycles, utility objects, musical instruments and toys, props from film productions, a bank-office setting from about 100 years ago, and a small cinema hall with a film about the founder. The collections include, among other things, three barrel organs (marknadspositiv) and one of Europe's first series-built electric cars, from 1919. Every year a new theme exhibition is created around a particular subject. The operation is run by the Almkvist family, and the museum has both a café with bistro and a gift shop.
