About the museum
The school museum in Västra Vemmenhög (Skolmuseet i Västra Vemmenhög) is in the school that was inaugurated in 1917 and closed in 1971. The museum was inaugurated in 1985 and is run on a voluntary basis by Stiftelsen Wämund (the Wämund foundation). The village is known as the place where Nils Holgersson begins his journey through Sweden in Selma Lagerlöf's book.
The schoolroom contains school equipment from earlier times, for example benches, pencil sharpeners, slate boards, ink pots and rural school charts. Much of the equipment has been donated from other schools in the area. The museum is described as a school museum that covers only the 1900s.
Besides the school setting, there is an exhibition about Selma Lagerlöf and Nils Holgersson, and in the entrance a theme exhibition on the village's history with the smithy, the church and the demolished mill. The artist Ola Larsson, who attended the school, drew inspiration here for his painting Byskolläraren (The Village Schoolteacher). Performances about Nils Holgersson are sometimes held in the schoolroom.
