About the museum
Forsmarks bruksmuseum is housed in the former works storehouse (bruksmagasinet) at Forsmarks bruk, one of Sweden's best-preserved company towns (brukssamhällen). The ironworks dates back to the 1570s, and with the Walloon forging method (vallonsmide), introduced in 1624, Forsmark grew into an ironworks of great importance. The manor house from the 1700s was designed by Jean Eric Rehn and completed in 1774. Iron production at Forsmark ended in 1897. Since 1975 the site has been owned by Forsmarks kraftgrupp, and it was then listed as a protected heritage building (byggnadsminne), the first such in Uppland.
The museum has three floors of works objects and historical exhibitions. These include the uttag (company store), where workers drew part of their wages in the form of food. Visitors can walk around on their own or join a museum walk that explains the exhibition settings. The museum is staffed according to the opening hours of the works.
