About the museum
Nya Kopparbergs Bergslags Hembygdsförening (local heritage society) was founded in 1923 on the initiative of Maja Forsslund, who early on collected and recorded the history of the district. The society's local history museum opened in 1924 in the old parish storehouse (sockenmagasinet) from 1756 and is the oldest of the society's museums.
Over the years the collections have grown into several small museums in buildings near the municipal hall. The Guldsmedsmuseet (Goldsmith Museum) opened in 1972 and is based on a workshop from the 19th century in Allersta; the Postmuseet (Postal Museum) opened in 1971 and commemorates the fact that the Treskillingbanco stamp (the three-skilling banco stamp) was postmarked in Kopparberg in 1857; and the photo studio, which remains in its original location and was in use until 1952, became a museum in 1973. There is also a shoemaker's museum with fittings from Sigurd E. Möller's shoe shop in Ställdalen, a section about the national fiddler (riksspelman) Carl Erik Hartman, and Kaveltorps gruvmuseum (Kaveltorp Mine Museum) with a large model of the mine area.
The museums are run voluntarily by the local heritage society, and visits mainly take place through guided tours.
