About the museum
Löa hytta lies in Löa by the strait between Sörsjön and Norrsjön, on the border between Lindesberg and Kopparberg. Iron production has taken place here since the 1400s, and the farmers of the village smelted pig iron until 1907, when the smelting works was blown out for the last time. Water power from the Kölsjöån river, ore from the Blanka and Stråssa mines and charcoal from the forests provided the conditions.
The works was run by a hyttlag (smelting-works team), a cooperative team of ironworkers who owned shares in the blast furnace and took turns using it. It is unique to Löa that the hyttlag has never been dissolved, and many people from Löa are still co-owners of the works. The works is a protected building and is today restored as it looked in the 1800s, with a blast furnace, a charcoal hut (kolarkoja), bridges, a smithy and a water wheel.
In the village there is also a mill from the 1850s with intact machinery, which was in operation until 1992, and a village saw that was closed in 1959 and has since been restored. The works, the mill and the saw show the tradition of shared ownership in a bergsman village. A village archive is also located in Löa.
