About the museum
Grängesbergsbanornas Järnvägsmuseum (Grängesberg Railways Museum), commonly called Lokmuseet (the Engine Museum), was formed in 1979 to preserve equipment from Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg–Oxelösunds Järnvägar (TGOJ, the Grängesberg–Oxelösund Railways Traffic Company) at the engine sheds in Grängesberg. The museum is run by an association and is part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen.
The engine shed that houses the museum was built in 1928. The site comprises engine sheds, a signal-box building, exhibitions and a large rail yard with about 14 kilometres of track.
The collection consists of about 160 rail vehicles built between the 1850s and the 1970s. The best known is the turbine locomotive M3t no. 71 from 1930, built by Nydqvist & Holm, which is described as the world's only working turbine locomotive and was restored for the SJ's 125th anniversary in 1981. Other objects include the steam locomotive OFWJ no. 8 from 1876, a Volvo inspection carriage from 1953, M3 no. 49 from 1917 and Gb no. 95 from 1942, the youngest steam locomotive in the collection.
