About the museum
The Stripa mine has been in operation, with interruptions, since the Middle Ages. There is evidence of mining as early as the 15th century, and during the 16th century Gustav Vasa and Erik XIV urged the burghers to resume mining, since the ore was well suited to cannon production. In the later part of the 19th century the mine experienced an upswing, and it was electrified early.
The preserved buildings come mainly from the mine’s heyday in 1930–1977, when the mine reached a depth of about 450 meters. The site is unusually complete, with mine shafts, underground workings, a sorting house (gruvlave), a concentration works, transport lines and a mine cottage (gruvstuga), and much of the machinery is still operable. At Stripa, mechanical rock drilling was developed, along with a new method for ore hoisting and the so-called Striparännan, a sink-float separation plant that exists only here. The architecture is functionalist, with monumental concrete structures and belt tunnels.
The Stripa mine has been a listed building since the mid-2000s and is regarded as a cultural environment without equal in the country. The area is fenced and can be visited on guided tours and selected events. The tour starts at the visitor centre and runs above ground. On the mine site there is also Stripabryggeriet (the Stripa Brewery), a craft brewery with a restaurant.
