About the museum
Koversta gammelby (Koversta old village) lies in Österfärnebo along Tidernas väg (the Road of the Ages) and is counted among Sweden's best-preserved old villages. The village consists of farms from the 17th and 18th centuries that stand where they were built, among them Åker-Ollas, Norrgårn, Mellangårn, Sörgårn and Ollas på Åsen. Several outbuildings have been moved here from other villages in the parish, as the original ones had decayed. The farms have wall paintings by Hans Wikström.
The farms came under Gysinge bruk (Gysinge ironworks), which was given the right to collect tax from the villages in return for the works setting up dragoons and manufacturing rifles for the Crown. The farmers became tenants under the works and were later dismissed, and until the 1940s the farms were used as service dwellings for people working under Åsbergs gård.
The Föreningen för hembygdsvård i Österfärnebo (Österfärnebo Heritage Conservation Association) was formed in 1918 and today owns the village. In summer the cottages are open to visitors. In Mellangården, sandwiches, home-baked coffee bread, ice cream and drinks are served, and in a craft shop in Norrgården local handicrafts and food products are sold. For children there is a play cottage and a summer-pasture cowshed (fäbodladugård), and guided tours of the village can be booked in advance.
