About the museum
Östervåla möbelmuseum is at Mårtsbogården, the homestead museum (hembygdsgård) of Östervåla hembygdsförening (Östervåla local heritage society). The association was founded in 1926 and Mårtsbogården was inaugurated in 1930. The site consists of about twenty buildings from the 1400s to the 1900s in a park.
The museum has a joinery workshop from 1913, moved to the site in 1991 from Östervåla Hemslöjd in the middle of the village. The workshop is furnished as a 1920s joinery with equipment from Bjurvalla, and in the right-hand part of the house a chair exhibition shows, among other things, the Östervåla chair (Östervålastolen). The house was built by joiner John Nilsson in 1913 and bought in 1918 by Svensk Hemslöjd, which started a craft school. It was then run as Östervåla Hemslöjd by the Stilander family.
In the building with exhibition and reception, erected in 1994 and inaugurated in 1995, both older and newly made Östervåla furniture is shown. Since 2019 the costume room (dräktkammaren) has also been here. Kartans möbelsnickeri outside the village belongs to the association's furniture museums.
