About the museum
Kartans möbelsnickeri (Kartan furniture joinery), about three kilometres north of the village of Östervåla, is the only complete furniture joinery from an earlier era preserved in Östervåla parish. The building was erected in the early 1800s and worked as a mill for a hundred years before it was converted into a joinery in 1917.
Operations ceased in 1996, when the last joiner, Gösta Pettersson, left the workshop as it looked. Tools, equipment and unfinished products bear witness to the work done in the joinery.
The joinery is managed by Östervåla hembygdsförening (Östervåla local heritage society) and belongs to the association's furniture museums, together with Östervåla möbelmuseum at Mårtsbogården.
