About the museum
Kristinehamns konstmuseum opened in October 1997 under the name MuseETT, with an exhibition by the Kristinehamn artist Bengt Olson. The museum was housed on the third floor of a former therapy building from the 1950s on the old hospital site, as one of several EU-financed projects. In 1999 it was given the name Kristinehamns konstmuseum, and the idea had grown out of the town's artists' colony and the twin-town exchange with the Danish town of Skagen.
The museum's first premises came to be called Kvadraten (the Square) after their shape, and are used for the permanent exhibition. The neighbouring Panncentralen (boiler house) was taken into use as an exhibition hall for young and experimental art in 1999 and today also houses the museum's restaurant. After two years as a project, the museum became permanent with support from the county council, the municipality and the county administrative board.
The museum shows modern and contemporary art. In 2003 a comprehensive exhibition of Picasso's public works was shown, with 55 original works, part of a European collaboration between nine museums. In Kristinehamn there has been since 1965 one of Picasso's monumental sculptures, executed by Carl Nesjar.
