About the museum
Stadsmuseet i Skövde (Skövde City Museum) was founded in 1946 by Skövde hembygds- och fornminnesförening (Skövde Local Heritage and Antiquities Association) in the old town hall at Hertig Johans torg. The town took over the operation in 1952, and the museum was then run by the municipality in the town hall until 2003. From 2005 the museum was housed in a former textile factory in Norrmalm.
In 2015 the collections were packed up, and in 2016 the factory was rebuilt as Skövde Kulturfabrik (Skövde Culture Factory). The museum's area increased considerably, and the Music School (Kulturskolan) moved into the same building. Today the museum's address is Rådmansgatan 28, where you also find Skaparverkstan (the Creators' Workshop) and Fabrikens fik och butik (the Factory's café and shop).
The collections comprise tens of thousands of objects and photographs from the Skövde area. In the basic exhibition on Skövde's history, visitors follow the town's development over 600 years, from a Catholic pilgrimage site to a modern industrial town, through people such as the patron saint Sankta Elin and thematic sections on health and illness, entertainment, work and school, crime and punishment, and housing and building. The open storeroom holds everyday objects such as Stone Age boats, one of the first microwave ovens and fittings from Skövde vattenkuranstalt (Skövde Water Cure Establishment). The museum also shows temporary exhibitions, holds lectures and workshops, and offers city walks. Also belonging to the museum is Helénstugan, Skövde's oldest surviving wooden house, which survived the town fire of 1759.
