About the museum
The cultural association Rödvillan was formed in 1999 and changed its name in 2024 to Rödvillans Museiförening (museum association). The association has its premises at Tyskavägen 2 in Hallstavik, in a house owned by Holmen Paper. The house is one of the Falu-red works villas in the old and now culturally protected works settlement.
The background is the Ossian model, a detailed model of Hallstavik and its paper mill, which was completed in 1998. It is named after Ossian Westell, who gave the model its shape and built a large part of it. The model was to remain in the house where it had been made, but the house needed repairs, and to look after it the association was formed. The aim became to preserve and document the history and development of the community, much like a local heritage association.
On the lower floor of the house there is a room of about 60 square metres, where the model of Hallstavik in 1930 takes up most of the space. Small exhibitions are also held there, so far including ones on the school, shipping, Konsum (the cooperative store chain), old festival grounds, posters from sports festivals and local artworks. The association hopes to restore one of the kitchens to a workers' home from 1930. Between 2007 and 2014 the association also looked after a model of the paper mill from 1947 in another flat, but it was moved back to the mill in 2014.
