About the museum
Albert Engström (1869–1940) was a writer, illustrator and founder of the humorous magazine Strix. In 1902 he bought the farm Augustberg outside Grisslehamn in northern Roslagen, where he and his wife Sigrid lived all year round until 1916. After that he kept the farm as a summer home until his death.
Today the museum is housed in the old residential house, where the family's home has been recreated so that it largely looks as it did in Engström's time. The house also contains a museum shop and a small art gallery. A short distance away, on a cliff by the sea, is the studio that Engström designed together with his pupil Carl Hagsten, completed in 1907. The rooms have remained largely untouched since his death, and the building has been a listed building since 1975.
The activities are run by the Albert Engström Society (Albert Engström-sällskapet), founded in 1981, which has about 800 members. The society manages the farm and the studio, publishes a journal and organises, among other things, studio evenings with music and storytelling during the summer. The farm also has Café Kalaset, which started as early as 1955, and Tecknarens hus (the Illustrator's House), the former stable, which is now used for ceramics and exhibitions.
