About the museum
Skebobruks museum tells the story of one of Uppland's oldest ironworks. A furnace for iron production is mentioned as early as 1444, which is the oldest certain evidence of medieval works activity in Uppland. A bar iron hammer was established in 1622, and in the 1680s Walloons came to Skebo and made the works a Walloon ironworks. The blast furnace was moved in 1686 to Edsbro, while the forge remained in Skebo. A wire-drawing mill came in 1765 and a rolling mill in 1815, and during the 19th century Skebo was Roslagen's largest workplace, with several hundred employees. The works went bankrupt in 1924. Of the works environment, the works street with multi-family houses, the manor house from 1770, storehouses and an orangery remain, among other things.
The museum emerged in the 1960s, when three well-known Skebo residents took the initiative to convert the old hose house (spruthuset) into a museum, which was inaugurated in 1972. Formal ownership lay with Häverö-Edebo Hembygdsförening (local heritage association), which lacked the resources to care for the building. By the end of the 1990s the decay had advanced a long way, but a group of local residents renovated the house and built up the exhibition shown today, and the museum was reinaugurated in June 2001.
The main organiser is the non-profit association Skebobruks Museiförening (Skebobruk Museum Association), which has around 125 members. The basic exhibition tells the story of the works, and every year a theme exhibition is also shown. The museum was named Årets arbetslivsmuseum (Working Life Museum of the Year) in 2010.
