About the museum
KVS-museet is located in an annex on the grounds of the former Kronprinsessan Victorias sjukhus (KVS, Crown Princess Victoria's Hospital) in Vejbystrand. Ahead of the centenary in 2003, members of Vejbyföreningen (Vejby association) contacted the property owners, who restored a smaller building. There the exhibition “Från KVK till KVS – 100 år” (From KVK to KVS – a hundred years) opened on 13 July 2003. Interest was so great that the museum reopened in summer 2004 and has remained since.
The sanatorium was founded in 1903 by Doctor Ernst Lindahl to treat children with bone and skin tuberculosis by the coast. The museum describes itself as Sweden's only museum that illuminates bone tuberculosis and its treatment at a coastal sanatorium. The exhibition shows, among other things, a patient room with authentic instruments and hospital furniture, and treatment with a Finsen lamp, an ultraviolet light source used against skin tuberculosis.
In the basement there is an exhibition about emigration, where visitors can follow the fates of three families. On the ground floor stands a model of the sanatorium area, which took fifteen years to build, and on the upper floor the rooms of Sister Alfa and Sister Tyra are shown. A more recent exhibition deals with the development of the village of Vejbystrand after the sanatorium was established, with activities along Byvägen (Village Road), the harbour, the swimming school and the children's colonies.
