About the museum

Heagården was built in 1862 by the farmer Jöns Hansson, who had bought 135 tunnland (a traditional Swedish unit of land) and wanted to show that he was a man of standing. The farm lies on the highest point of the estate, with a large brick house on a high granite foundation to the south and farm buildings in half-timbering around a cobbled farmyard. It has not been much renovated, which is one of its strengths, and it was run as a farm until 1968.

His granddaughter Elisabet Nilsson (1884–1968) grew up on the farm, and on her death she bequeathed it to a foundation, which still owns it. The foundation is to preserve the farm for as long as possible. The land is leased out, while the buildings are kept open as a museum. Elisabet Nilsson's home remains intact, with parlours, a kitchen and a dining room showing life in the countryside over a hundred years ago.

The farm today has several smaller collections: a fire brigade museum with Ängelholm's old fire engines and firefighting equipment, a police museum, an agricultural museum with farm tools, a working village smithy, a joinery workshop, a shoe and slipper-making workshop and an old drapery shop (manufakturaffär). The park-like garden is an unusually well-preserved 19th-century garden in German style, with symmetry, lawns, gravel paths and fruit trees.
