About the museum
Lidingö museum opened in June 1998 in the newly renovated Villa Fornboda on Lejonvägen, near Lidingö centre. The villa was built in 1907 to designs by Carl Kempendahl and David Lundegårdh and is one of the earliest buildings in the then newly formed Lidingö villa town. The building is owned by the municipality, and the museum is run on a voluntary basis by Lidingö hembygdsförening (Lidingö Local Heritage Society), which was formed in 1931.
The permanent exhibition tells of Lidingö's development, from the island that once rose out of the sea, via the farming community and the early villa towns, to the modern town. It has been updated and extended and covers, among other things, industries, transport with bridges, tracks and roads, the protected green areas and the island's cultural life. There is also information about activities during the Second World War that were partly secret.
Alongside the permanent exhibition, shorter theme exhibitions are shown, and lectures, city walks and cultural programmes are arranged regularly. The society also maintains collections of objects, books and documents, and a picture archive with some 26,000 digital photographs. The museum shop sells literature about Lidingö and gifts connected with the island.
