About the museum
Linbanemuseet is located in the old drive station at Malmberga in Västermo parish, just north of Lake Hjälmaren. The station was one of the intermediate stations on the limestone cableway between the Forsby limestone quarry in Södermanland and the industries in Köping in Västmanland. The cableway was built in 1939–1941 by AB Nordströms Linbanor and was about 42 kilometres long.
For 53 years around 25 million tonnes of limestone were transported on the cableway. From 1967 operations were controlled automatically, which meant the intermediate stations could be staffed less. The cableway was taken out of service in June 1997, was named Årets industriminne (Industrial Heritage of the Year) in 2003, and demolition of parts of the route began in 2013.
The association Kalklinbanans vänner (Friends of the Limestone Cableway) worked to preserve the cableway and took over the drive station after about twenty years. The museum opened in 2018 and tells the story of the cableway, its technology and the work along the route. Visits and guided tours are by booking.
