About the museum

Julita gård lies by Lake Öljaren, about 25 kilometres from Katrineholm in western Södermanland, and has a history stretching back more than a thousand years: monastery, royal estate, gunsmithing works (styckebruk), noble estate and manor house. The last private owner, Lieutenant Arthur Bäckström, bequeathed the farm to the Nordiska museet in 1941, and since then the museum has preserved the environments as they looked around 1900. The Stora huset was built in the first half of the 1730s and mainly shows Arthur Bäckström's private home and possessions. On the farm's grounds there are close to 360 buildings, including stables, cattle sheds, a brickworks, a fire station, a dairy, crofts (torp) and state-worker dwellings (statarbostäder).

Julita skans is Bäckström's own open-air museum, named after Skansen in Stockholm. It consists of the Skansenmuseet, the Skansen cottages (Skansenstugorna) and the Skansen church (Skansenkyrkan). Bäckström rebuilt cottages that he moved to the farm in the national romantic style, and the collection grew to about 7,500 objects. The Skansenmuseet was completed in 1930, and the Skansen church was added two years later. Sveriges lantbruksmuseum (Sweden's Agricultural Museum) was also located here, showing parts of the Nordiska museet's agricultural history collections in the old cattle-shed buildings.

The manor area includes an extensive park with kitchen, fruit, hop and style gardens, where the Nordiska museet cares for living collections of cultivated plants, including clone archives for apple and hops and collections of peonies and pelargoniums. During the summer, guided tours, a large family area with play environments, a shop, a café and an inn are offered.
