About the museum

Råshult in Stenbrohult parish is the place where Carl von Linné was born on 23 May 1707. His father Nils Linnaeus was a curate (komminister) in the parish and lived at the curate's residence (komministerbostället). The family moved to Stenbrohult vicarage when Carl was two years old. The original house burned down, and the present Linnéstugan was built at some point between 1751 and 1781, so Linné was not born in this building.

The cottage was the curate's residence until 1903 and became a listed building in 1977. In the 1930s the Linné local heritage society (Hembygdsföreningen Linné) renovated it, and a full restoration was carried out in 2006. In 2002 the curate's residence Råshult Södregård became Sweden's tenth cultural reserve by decision of the County Administrative Board of Kronoberg County.

Today Råshult is run as a farm, and the landscape is being recreated to resemble that of the 18th century, with meadows, pastures and gardens. The gardens are based on Linné's own descriptions of his father's garden and include, among others, Lustgården (the pleasure garden), Örtagården (the herb garden), Humlegården (the hop garden) and Kålgården (the cabbage garden). Visitors can walk on marked paths, visit the garden café and take part in guided tours where Linné or his sister tells the story.
