About the museum

Nybergs smedja (Nyberg's Smithy) lies in Arnanäs, about two kilometres north of Virestad's church village (kyrkby), on the road towards Eneryda. The oldest part of the building can be dated to 1820, and the smithy has been extended on two occasions. All the equipment from older smithing traditions is preserved.

The smithy is owned by Virestads Hembygdsförening (Virestad Local Heritage Society), which was formed in 1925. The association carried out a comprehensive restoration in 2009, and the smithy is today in usable condition. It is used for events and activities, but is not open daily.

Every year in September the association holds Smedjans dag (Smithy Day). Then the smithy is opened, the forge (ässja) is lit, a smith works on site, and visitors can eat ässjefläsk (forge pork) and buy coffee and pastries. The smithy is also shown at other events in the district, for example Älmhults konstrunda (the Älmhult art tour). Anyone who is particularly interested can contact the local heritage society and ask about a viewing.
