About the museum
Malexanders hembygdsgård Södra Sand lies on the northern shore of lake Sommen in the village of Malexander. In 1951 the parish decided to give all the buildings at Södra Sand to Malexanders Hembygdsförening (Malexander Local Heritage Association), on condition that the farm was managed and kept in a dignified state and that its exterior was preserved as far as possible. Södra Sand was inaugurated as a local heritage farm in 1956, and the farm today consists of ten buildings.
In the living farm museum the association wants to show how people lived and worked in Malexander in earlier centuries. In the lodge there is an exhibition of objects arranged by forestry and charcoal burning, hunting and fishing, and crafts and farming. In the other buildings the objects are arranged as they most likely stood in the past. Some objects have been restored to usable condition to show how the work was done.
The association was formed in 1935 and owns a total of 18 buildings: ten at Södra Sand, four elsewhere in the church village, including Klockaregården Tåbo, which today houses a parish room and a museum, and four at Björnön in Modalen. The association arranges guided tours for groups, a midsummer festival at Södra Sand, a parish walk and a flea market in summer.
