About the museum

Råås kvarn was built around 1742 by Linna å. In 1741 district judge (häradshövding) Johan Svanhals and his wife Märta Kristina Gyllenståhl applied to build a mill with two pairs of millstones at Råås, since the parish had no mills and grain had to be transported a long way. The mill was unusual for its high stone base of dry-stone masonry, the walls of the lower part being about two metres thick. The base made it possible to use large waterwheels, which were needed because the water supply in Linna å is limited.

Originally the mill was driven by two overshot waterwheels, which in the 1920s were replaced by more efficient turbines. Milling ceased in 1953, and the last miller was Ture Karlsson. In the 1970s the idea of saving the mill arose, and in 1979 the association Råås kvarns vänner (Friends of Råås Mill) was formed. Since then it has slowly restored the mill to working order and refurbished the other buildings and dams.

The mill returned to operation in 1987 after 34 years of standstill and was then declared a listed building. The association has about twenty members who work voluntarily for one week each year, always in week 29, in consultation with Östergötlands museum. Every other year Råås kvarndagar (Råås Mill Days) are held, when the area is open to the public with craftspeople and exhibitors.
