About the museum

Smedstorps dubbelgård is a cultural reserve (kulturreservat) and listed building in Norra Vi parish in Ydre Municipality. The farm has kept its 18th-century character, with small log-built and unpainted buildings surrounded by an old-fashioned cultivated landscape of small fields, meadows and grazed pastures. Smedstorp supported one family in the early 18th century, and in the 1730s it was divided into two farms on the same farmyard, with a double set of almost all the buildings.

The enclosed farmyard is divided into a main yard (mangård) with the dwelling house and food storehouses, and a cattle yard (fägård) with byres, barns and cart sheds, separated by a picket fence (spjälstaket). The farm's oldest building is a storehouse whose ground floor is dated to 1697, and the post granary from 1741 stands on posts to keep food dry and free from pests. Twin cottages and double farms were common in southern Östergötland and northern Småland, often farmed by two brothers in so-called sämjedelning (division by amicable agreement).

The land consolidation (laga skifte) was not carried out until 1942, one of the last in Östergötland. In 1953 Östergötlands museum bought the old buildings and the plot, which saved them from being moved or falling into ruin. Descendants of the two brothers still own and farm the agricultural land. The crofter's cottage Hagalund north of the farm is open to visitors, and along the gravel road you pass two burial grounds.
