About the museum
Ulrika museum was inaugurated in 1962 in a building specially erected for the purpose at the market square in Ulrika. The museum is based on the collections of the timber merchant Sven Jakob Carlson (1872–1955) and his wife Hanna. Sven Jakob began collecting coins as a schoolboy and later received objects from older people who trusted that he would look after them well, while Hanna contributed textiles.
In 1950 the couple donated the collections to Ulrika parish on condition that a foundation be formed and a museum built. The parish accepted the gift and formed the Museistiftelsen (Museum Foundation), and the building was completed in 1962.
The museum today has over 3,000 objects that tell of life in the parish: agricultural tools, household objects, clothing, textiles and coins. Since 2002 a new theme exhibition has been arranged each season on different parts of the district’s history and culture. The museum also has an archive with documents from Ulrika in earlier times, a photo collection, maps and newspaper clippings, and it publishes yearbooks on objects, exhibitions and local history. The museum shop sells literature, postcards and crafts from Ulrika.
