About the museum
The museum was created in memory of the artist and sea captain Gösta Werner (1909–1989). He was born in Stockholm, went to sea after lower secondary school and trained as a ship's master. Only after the Second World War did he become a full-time artist, studying among others under Isaac Grünewald and André Lhote. His painting went from realistic still lifes and landscapes via non-figurative works to a more figurative art with marine motifs, where he often let text such as ship names and harbours become part of the picture.
The museum is on Strandvägen in central Simrishamn, in a building from 1880 that housed the town's first hot-bath house and later a leather factory. The house was extensively rebuilt by Barup & Edström when the museum moved in in 1993. It is today owned by Gösta Werner Sällskapet (Gösta Werner Society), a non-profit association with about 350 members.
The museum shows contemporary art, design, music, literature and poetry, together with a collection of Gösta Werner's art, which is managed by a foundation. The activities also include concerts and lectures.
